Assyrian Nag kings Alagi and Vilagi were worshipped traditionally India.[Atharv Ved 5.13.6-10]
The tradition still perpetuates in the form of Nag Panchmi festival.
This shows Nag worship and totemism (belief in the kinship of a group of people with a common totem tradition).
One should remember that both Nag and humans have common origin from Kashyap. Its only a mater of chromosomes and DNA replica that a different breed is obtained with entirely different or opposite characters.
Their original seat was Taxila-Takshila, which was also the metropolis of serpent worship and the spot whence it spread all over India.
The Nag dynasty belonged to Madrak Jat Gotr of Yadav Vansh and was devotees of Bhagwan Shiv. They had a number of ruling dynasties such as Takshak Nag, Bachak Nag, Kilkil Nag, Karkotak, Kali Raman etc., all of which are Jat Gotr. Mathura, Padma Wati and Kanti Pur were capitals of Nag dynasty. Nags of Padma Wati were called Tank, which is also a Jat Gotr and are found in 24 villages near Sonipat.

Nags illustrated divine characters, like change of body form from serpent to humans etc. Purans mention of many Nag Kingdoms. Present day Delhi used to be the abode of Nags which was turned into Indraprasth by Bhagwan Shri Krashn and Arjun.
Mathura, Padma Wati, Pawaya and Kanti Pur were the capitals of Nag dynasty. Arjun's mother Kunti was a Nag Kanya and Bheem Sen reached Nag Lok through an opening in the Ganga where he was granted a warm welcome and his poison was sucked. Ulupi-the second wife of Arjun was the  daughter of Kouravy-the king of serpents.[Vishnu Puran and Bhagwat Puran]

NAG VANSH CHHOTA OF NAG PUR :: The first Nag Vanshi ruler was Phani Mukut Rai born in 64. He was the adopted son of Madra Munda, the Parth Raja of Sutiambe. Phani Mukut Rai was found near a tank as a newborn where a hooded Cobra-Nag was protecting him. Phani Mukut Rai ruled from 83 to 162. Till date, four Nag Vanshavalis are available that prove that the Nag Vanshis ruled over Chhota Nagpur plateau in India for close to two thousand years, from the 1st century to 1,951, when the Zamindari was abolished. This put the Nag Vanshis among the top dynasties that ruled the longest in the world, which include the Dulo clan in Bulgaria, The Imperial House of Japan and Hong Bang dynasty of Korea.
Till the reign of Akbar, Chota Nagpur had not come under the suzerainty of the Mughals and the Nag Vanshi rulers had been ruling over this region as independent rulers. Akbar was informed of a rebel Afghan Sardar, Junaid Kararani, who had taken shelter in Chota Nagpur. Besides, the emperor also got information of diamonds being found in this area. Consequently, Akbar ordered Shahbaz Khan Turbani to attack Kokhra (the then seat of Nag Vanshi kings and capital of Chota Nagpur). At that time Raja Madhu Singh, the 42nd Nag Vanshi king was ruling at Kokhra. Consequently Kokhra was subdued by the armies of Akbar and a sum of rupees six thousand was fixed as its annual revenues payable to the Mughals.
By the advent of the reign of Jahangir, Nag Vanshi Raja Durjan Sal had come to power in Chhota Nagpur. He refused to pay the rent fixed by the Emperor Akbar. Jahangir ordered Ibrahim Khan (governor of Bihar) to attack Kokhra. The details of this invasion are mentioned in Jahangir’s memoirs, Tuzuk-i-Jahan Giri. There was also another reason behind the invasion. This was the acquisition of the diamonds found in the bed of the river Sankh in the region. Due to its diamonds Chhota Nagpur was also known as Heera Nagpur and its Raja Durjan Sal, being an expert of diamonds, was known as Heera Raja among the people. Thus to subdue the Raja of Chhota Nagpur and to acquire valuable diamonds, Jahangir decided to invade Chhota Nagpur.
On getting orders from the emperor, Ibrahim Khan marched against Kokhra in 1,615. He entered the Nag Vanshi territories easily with the help of his guides. The Nag Vanshi Raja Durjan Sal found himself beleaguered, within the hills and vales He fled and was at last found in a cave with some of his family members. He was arrested and all diamonds which were in the possession of Durjan Sal and his family were captured by Ibrahim Khan. Twenty four elephants also fell into the hands of Ibrahim Khan. After this, Kokhara was subdued and the diamonds found there were sent to the Imperial court. After his defeat and arrest, Durjan Sal offered as ransom jewels, gold and silver to the value of crores of rupees, but Ibrahim Khan did not release him and took him as a captive to Patna. From there he was sent to the Imperial court and subsequently imprisoned in the fort of Gwalior.
Durjan Sal’s confinement lasted twelve years. Ultimately, the very diamonds which had caused the misfortune of Durjan Sal secured him his release and former prosperity. It so happened that from some place, two very large diamonds were brought to Emperor Jahangir’s court. A doubt arose in the mind of the Emperor over the genuineness of one of them. As no one in his court was able to confirm or relieve his suspicion, the Heera Raja was brought to the Imperial court from his incarceration. When the two diamonds were brought before him, he without any hesitation pointed out the fake one. To prove it to the court and the Emperor, he requested two rams to be brought to the court. He then tied the two diamonds on the horns of the two rams and made them fight each other. As a result of the fight, the fake diamond shattered but there was no scratch on the pure one. The Emperor was so impressed and pleased with Durjan Sal that he not only released him but also restored the prosperity taken from him in addition to his kingdom.
The generous Durjan Sal further begged the Emperor to release the other Rajas who had been his companions in prison and his prayer was granted. Being pleased with Durjan Sal, Jahangir conferred the title of Shah on the Kokhra ruler. On his return to Chhota Nagpur, Durjan Sal assumed the title of Maha Raja and changed his surname. Most probably from that time Shah was added with the names of the Nag Vanshi kings. The reign of Durjan Sal lasted for about thirteen years. He died in 1,640.
NAG KANYA ULUPI :: Ulupi was the daughter of Kouravy, a descendant of Nagraj Airavat. Her father ruled the underwater kingdom of serpents in the Ganga river. Ulupi was a well-trained warrior. These serpents were having divine powers to change themselves to humans or any other organism.
Arjun, exiled from Indr Prasth left for a one-year pilgrimage as a penance for violating the terms of his marriage to Draupadi, the brother's common wife. Accompanied by Brahmns, Arjun reached Kam Roop, North-Eastern region of present-day India. One day when he bathed in the Ganga river to perform his rituals, the current pulled him inside the river. He later realised that it was Ulupi, the Nag princess, who grasped and pulled him into the river. She held him with her hands and travelled at her will. They finally ended up in an underwater kingdom, the abode of Kourvay. Arjun saw a sacrificial fire in the place and offered his rites in the fire. Agni was pleased with Arjun's unhesitating offering of oblations.
Delighted by her act, Arjun inquired Ulupi about her background. She revealed her lineage and admitted that she had fallen in love with him. Arjun, however, declined her proposal citing his celibacy on his pilgrimage. Ulupi argued that his celibacy was limited only to Draupadi, Arjun's first wife. Convinced by her argument, he married her and spent a night with her. A son named Iravan was born to them. Pleased by Arjun, Ulupi granted him a boon that all animals that lived under water would obey him and he would be invincible under the water.
The Vasus, Bhishm Pitamah's brothers, cursed Arjun after he killed Bhishm through treachery in the Kuru Kshetr War. When Ulupi heard of the curse, she sought the help of her father, Kouravy. Her father went to Maa Ganga, Bhishm's mother and requested her for a relief from the curse. Upon hearing him, Ganga said that Arjun would be killed by his own son, Babru Vahan-Arjun's son, through Chitrangada and brought back to life, when Ulupi placed a gem on his chest.
Following her father's advice, Ulupi instigated Babru Vahan to fight Arjun. When Arjun went to Mani Pur with the horse intended for the Ashw Medh sacrifice, the king Babru Vahan, as directed by Ulupi, challenged Arjun for a duel. In the fierce battle that took place between them, both were mangled by the other's arrows. Finally, Arjun was mortally wounded and was killed by his son when he shooted a powerful arrow at him. Chitrangada rushed to the spot and abused Ulupi for instigating Babru Vahan to fight Arjun. Repenting of his deed, Babru Vahan was determined to kill himself, but was promptly stopped by Ulupi. She went to her kingdom and brought the gem (Mani). When she placed the gem on Arjun's chest, his life was restored, thus relieving him of the Vasus' curse. When brought back to his life, Arjun became happy to see Ulupi, Chitrangada and Babru Vahan. He took all of them to Hastinapur.

(1). AGNI KUL :: Historically, it was the process of returning back to Hindu fold of the Kshatriy who had adopted Buddhism and abandoned the Vedic traditions.
Rajasthan was ruled by large number of small democratic republics of various Jat clans and other tribes. These republics were there till the rule of Harsh Vardhan. After Harsh Vardhan in 647 AD, the Jat republics weakened due to invasions by Mughals, Turks, Muslims and Yavans. In the sixth and seventh century when new Agni Kul clan of Rajputs was created in Mount Abu, many of the Jat clans merged in them. Some Jat Gotr joined or merged with the Pratihar Confederation. But Majority of Jat Clans merged with Chauhans. Jat clans existed earlier as well. At this turning point they identified them with the new clans termed as Raj Puts. Badwas, Bhats, Jagas etc. had been identified with new clan of Agni Kul Kshatriy.
PhotoRaj Rishi turned Brahm Rishi Vishwamitr and Vashishth Ji joined hands to recreate-revive the Kshatriys. The sages & saints gathered at Mount Abu where various other hermits and sages were constantly performing religious rites. The sages preferred to visit Ksheer Sager abode of Bhagwan Vishnu under the patronage of the Creator Bhagwan Brahma, who had occupied a seat over the floating Lotus (emblem of eternity). Brahma Ji requested Bhagwan Vishnu to regenerate the warrior race. Eventually they returned to Mount Abu with Indr, Brahma Ji, Bhagwan Rudr, Bhagwan Vishnu and all the divinities. The fire-fountain (Anhal Kund, अनहल-अग्नि  कुण्ड) was lustrated with the holy waters of the Ganga; expiatory rites were performed and it was resolved that the King of Heaven-Dev Raj Indr will  a initiate the work of recreation.
PARMAR ::  Dev Raj Indr formed a doll (Putli, puppet, पुतली) with Doob grass (दूब घास) and nurtured it with elixir (अमृत) reciting the Sanjeevni Mantr and offered to Agni Dev in the Holy sacrificial fire in the Agni Hotr-the fire-fountain.  A figure slowly emerged from the flame, bearing in the right hand a mace and exclaiming, Mar-mar (slay, slay). He was called Parmar. Abu, Dhar and Ujjain were assigned to him as a territory.
SOLANKI :: Brahma Ji was then entreated to frame one from his own essence (ansh, अंश). He made an image, threw it into the pit, whence issued a figure armed with a sword (Khadag, खड़ग) in one hand, with the Veds in the other and a Janeu, (sacred thread, जनेऊ) round his neck. He was named Chaluky or Solanki and Anhal Pur & Patan were appropriated to him.
PARIHAR :: Bhagwan Shiv-Rudr formed the third. The image was sprinkled with the water of Maa Ganga and on the incantation being read, a black ill-favoured figure arose, armed with the Dhanus (धनुष, bow & arrow). As his foot slipped when sent against the demons, he was called Parihar and placed as the guardian of the gates. These races, the sons of Agni, were but regenerated and converted by the Brahmans to fight their battles.
Agni Vansh (अग्निवंश) or Agni Kul (अग्निकुल) is one of Major Kshatriy clan which descended from Agni the Deity of Fire-Agni. Agni Puran mentions the birth of these Kshatriy from the fire like Draupadi and Dhrashtdhyumn in Panchal, which resides in Mount Abu in North-Western India after the elimination-wiping off, destruction of ancient Kshatriy Kul dynasties.
The deity is worshipped in mount Abu as as Achleshwar (अचलेश्वर). The auspicious Agni Kund (अग्निकुण्ड, auspicious-holy fire place)  is still shown on the summit of Abu, where the four races were created by the Brahmans to fight the battles of Achleshwar and polytheism, against the mono-theistic Buddhists & the invader-barbarian Muslims, mainly.
Agni Vanshi Rajputs emerged from the Agni Kund (sacrificial pit-pot) as the result of the final sacrifice offered to Agni Dev as (1). Pratihar or Parihar, (2). Chauhan, (3). Parmar & (4). Solanki, Chaluky or Chaluk.
The miscreant barbarian invader Muslims started destroying the religious practices, rituals, prayers, Agni Hotr, Hawan etc., compelling the Brahmns to perform the Yagy to obtain warriors to slaughter the invaders. As per the Government of India records, "Khatri is a popular variant of the Sanskrit word Kshatriy, which was used to describe the warrior caste among the Hindus according to the Varnashram propounded by the Shastr-scriptures".
The Khatri were the backbone of Indian trade (trading community-Vaeshy)  with central Asia. They some how survived even in the hardest times of Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan.

In the Vrahad Vishnu Puran under the heading of the Mithila Mahatamy in the Second Chapter, Shlok 20-21, it has been said :: Mithila, Taerbhuhisch-Tirbhukti Vaedehi, Naemikanan, Gyan Khetr-Gyan Shila, Krap Pith, Swarn Langal, Paddhati, Janki Janm Bhumi, Nit Peksh, Vikal Mash, Ramanand Kari, Vish Bhavini & Nity Mangal are the 12 names of Mithila i.e., Janak Puri.
"Antarvahyascha Sarvatra madhyante Ripavah sada Mithilanam Sajneya Janakasch kritamahi; Makaro Vishwakarta cha Thakarsthitipalakah Lakaro laykarta vai trimara Shaktyobhavan".
Inside and outside, who churn out enemies. Mithila be understood as the where Janaks ruled the land.
मि-Mi’s Makar signifies creator-Brahma Ji and थी-Thi’s Thakar signifies who looks after-nurturer ला-La’s Lakar signifies the Destroyer and Tri Matra is for the Power. Thakur stands for Bhagwan Vishnu-the nurturer. Destroyer is Bhagwan Mahesh-Shiv.
जनक :: उत्पत्ति-प्रारम्भ  करने वाला; Enunciator, to begin with.
After 71 Chatur Yugi (4 cosmic era :- Sat, Treta, Dwapar and Kali Yug) one Indr comes to throne who reins 3,67,20,000 human years. He is called Manu and Manvantar is the time frame. 14 Indr are coming to throne of heaven.
Those live very long are called Chiranjivi-immortals. At the present moment there are 8 Chiranjivis :: Ashwatthama, Bahu Bali, Vyas, Hanuman Ji, Vibhishan, Krapachary, Bhagwan Parshu Ram and Rishi Markandey.
During the 24th Chatur Yugi Brahm Ji asked Vashishth to go to Mratyu Lok (Bhuwan, abode, Prathvi-earth) for becoming priest of Sury Vanshi Kings. Vashishth Ji protested that Purohitai-family priesthood was prohibited for him as a profession. Brahma Ji said that Bhagwan Vishnu HIMSELF would take birth in Sury Vansh in Treta Yug. Vashishth Ji said that he would go but with one exception.
Vashishth said, "You say Ramavatar will be there in Treta. Now, Sat Yug is going on, then Dwapar will come and then  Treta will come. I cannot live for so long in Mratyu Bhuwan as :- Sat Yug is of 17,28,000 years. Dwapar is of 12,96,000 years. Treta is of 8,64,000 years and Kali Yug is of 4,32,000 years. If you make Treta after Sat Yug, I may go.”
Brahma Ji accepted that and since then Treta is coming after Sat Yug. Before that 24 times Sat Yug was followed by Dwapar and then by Treta. On the acceptance by Brahma Ji, Vashishth Ji came to Mratyu Bhuwan and became priest of Sury Vansh.
SURY VANSH :: The son of Sun was Manu, who had four sons :- (1). Ang, (2). Bang, (3). Nimi (Nimay) and (4). Awadh (After whose name Ang Desh, Bang Desh, Nepal Desh and Awadh had been named).
After Sat Yug,  Treta Yug would follow, when Bhagwan Ram will take incarnation but how could he marry Sita of his own Gotr and Dynasty and hence, Brahma  had to make a way.
One day Brahma Ji distracted mind of Nimi who requested Vashishth to have a Yagy, so that he could reach Swarg-heaven with the body. Vashishth accepted his request and he went home. Nimay started arrangements for Yagy. Seers were invited. All except Vashishth was present on due time. A messenger was sent for him.
Vashishth became angry and said he had committed Indr before him for the Yagy and hence he was going to Indr.
Knowing that Nimay was in deep grief and proclaimed for the cancellation of Yagy. But all seers said that in the absence of  Vashishth, the Yagy be held with appointing Gautam as Achary.
Gautam started Yagy-sacrifice to fire. That time kings had the Gotr of Gurus and so now Nimay's Gotr (title-surname) was changed  to Gautam from Vashishth  and Yagy Sankalp  was for 500 years. When Vashishth returned from Indr’s place-Heaven, his son Shakti Ji informed him of the whole episode. Vashishth reached Nimay’s place and both exchanged hot words. Vashishth took water in his hand & cursed, “Sadeh Videho Bhav”. Let your body fall and you become without a body.
Nimay-Nimi also cursed him. With the curse of Vashishth Nimay died. With the curse of Nimay Vashishth Ji reached Varun Lok seeking life by “Par Kaya Pravesh”-entering into another man's body.
Varun listening to his prayer gave place to Vashishth’s soul in his heart and since then was known as Mitr Varun.
Once, Mitr Varun had sperm fall seeing the nymph That sperm was kept in a Ghat. August was born as result of it  and hence he is called Ghat-Yoni utpann (घट योनि उत्पन्न, produced from a piture-earthen pot used for filing water for cooling it.).
Some sperm fell over the Lotus leaf from which Vashishth was born & is called a  Vaeshy Putr.
After the death of Nimay, he was asked  to remain as hair above the eyes (Eye-brows, the Nimi) seers churned out  a son (Mathi Kaya) of his dead body who was hence, called Mithi.
Since then, Nimesh is a unit of time and is termed Nimesh-i.e., the time taken in a blink of eye
Mithi established a good capital, which was named after him as Mithila Puri-Holy city of Mithila.
Being born of the body of father, he took title of Janak. Since that day whoever be the king, was called Janak. Ksheer Dhwaj Janak, father of Mata Sita was the 21st king in Janak Vansh-clan (hierarchy, dynasty, lineage).
19 seers had came from the different parts of the country to participate in Nimi’s Yagy; who settled down in Mithila & their sons are called from that Gotr-linage. Bhagwan Shri Ram and Maa Sita, both of them were going to take incarnation in Ikshvaku Vansh and thus their marriages would not be solemnised. So, it was planned to make a change in Maa Sita's Gotr leading to Janak Vansh.
Raja Janak is well known throughout India and abroad because of his being relinquished-detached and a virtuous king, who carefully nursed his citizens. He was called Videh-released as well. Another reason, rather more important is his being the father of Maa Sita, an incarnation of Maa Laxmi and the queen of Ayodhya. The third reason is his conversation with Sage Ashtawakr Ji, after who's name the Treatise on Relinquishment called Ashtawakr Geeta has been written. He was the 21st king of the Janak dynasty which had its origin in King Nimi followed by Mithi produced from his dead remains by the sages. His kingdom got the name Mithila after the emperor Mithi and thereafter it became known as Mithila Puri or Janak Puri. Puri is a sacred place for the Hindus.

Mithila (मिथिला) which was capital of Videh kingdom is located in Janak Pur situated between foothills of Himalay of Nepal and the  Holy River Maa Ganga. This city is identified as modern day Janak Pur  Dham in Dhanush district of Nepal. This region was also called Tirbhukti, the ancient name of Tirhut. The Videh or Mithila Kingdom is believed to be bounded on the north by the Himalay, on the south of Ganga, on the east the Kosi river and on the west the Gandak river. It was also the region where two most venerated names in the religious history of the world-Gautam Buddh ninth incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu and Vardhman Mahavir, spent considerable time.
Ancestor of the first mythical King of this region was Nimi, who ruled in Saraswati river region. As per the mythological tales, Nimi died due to curse placed on him by his Guru-Sage Vashishth. After his death there was a period of anarchy. The sages then gathered and implored the spirit of Nimi to re assume human form. The dead body of Nimi was placed in a churn in the hope that the dead body of Nimi would resume human form. Sages succeeded in their effort and MITHI (means soil) emerged from churn. The tribe, initially ruled by Nimi, left the Saraswati region under the leadership of Mithi and after long period of wandering finally settled on the banks of Sad Nir, now identified as Gandak. Since, he was born out of body of his father, he was called JANAK. After this, the Kings of Mithila were called Janak. The most famous Janak was Ksheer Dhwaj Janak, father of Sita-21st king. There were 52 kings in the dynasty of Videh Janak.
The region was originally known as Videh. The kingdom of Videh is mentioned for the first time in Yajur Ved Sanhita. Mithila, the capital of Videh is mentioned in Buddhist Jatak, the Brahmns the Purans (described in detail in Brahad Vishnu Puran and various epics such as Ramayan and Mahabharat. In the 6th century BC, Lichchhvi were defeated by Ajat Shatru of the Haryank dynasty and ruler of Magadh and thus Mithila region came under control of Magadh empire. Thereafter, several dynasties such as Shishu Nag, Nand, Maury, Shung, Kant, Gupt, Vardhan etc. ruled there from time to time. There was no significant ruler in Mithila after Janaks till 5th-6th century when Jay Wardhan Raja Salhesh became King. He made his capital at Mahisauth-Sirha (now in Nepal). He defended the region against attacks by Tibetans several times. Hence, he was called Shaelesh (king of Mountains) from Jay Wardhan which in local dialect was called Salhesh.

KARNATAK DYNASTY (11th-14th century) :: The main influences on Nepal came from Mithila or Tirhut to the South. This area came intermittently under the domination of warriors allied to the Chaluky dynasty from Karnatak in southern India. One of their lieutenants, Nany Dev defeated the last King of Sen Dynasty, Laxman Sen and became King of Mithila in 1,097 CE. Nany Dev had come from west and had his first capital at Simran Garh (Bir Ganj) in the Tarai. From there, the king launched raids that allowed the Chaluky to later claim domination over Nepal. King Nany Dev attacked Kathmandu valley and annexed it to his large kingdom. The people who had come with the king settled down in the valley. Someshwar Dev, a Chaluky name, was the Nepal king from 1,178-1,185 CE indicating this influence. After conquering entire Mithila, Nany Dev shifted his capital to Kamal Dity Sthan (Kamal Dan). Another village named Andharatharhi village in Madhu Bani district is also mentioned to be capital of Karnatak. In the said village, there are six dozen ponds of which 27 ponds constitute the beads of a picturesque garland. King Hari Singh Dev was very famous. He was instrumental in initiating and implementing Panji Vyavastha or Panji Probands in Maethil Brahmns (मैथिल ब्राह्मण) and Maethil Kayasth (मैथिल और कर्ण कायस्थ, Karn Kayasth).  He was also great patron of art and literature. Kayasth is a mixed breed which sprung up by the combination of Brahmn father and Shudr mother. This breed has a sharp brain and it masters various arts like dance and music.
